Little Italy, Rochester

The Little Italy of Rochester, New York is located in a Town bordering the cities west side, called Gates. For years Gates was unofficially given the nickname of the "Little Italy of Rochester", ever since the early 1960's. At one point the entire City of Rochester was once completely full of Italians in the early 1900's, when immigrants from Italy flooded the American shores. Rochester along with many other north eastern cities became a home for the booming Italian population, and Rochester was looked at as a smaller New York City of Upstate New York. Italian Americans dominated the city for many years, but just like the Italians came in and took over the city, more ethnic groups began filling up the city as well. So in the late 1950's early 1960's Italian Americans began moving outwards to the growing areas of Rochester's surrounding suburb's. Some went to Irondequoit and some went to East Rochester, which are touching suburbs on the east side, but the majority moved to the cities west side to the touching suburbs of Greece and Gates, which have always had the greatest reputation for their Italian American communities. But Gates was the Town that was meant to be Rochester's Little Italy, every street and every corner has an Italian restaurant or an Italian Deli and Bakery on it. Gates is the home of Rochester's Italian American Community Center, and also the home of the Italian American Sports Club along with having an Italian festival every summer, but in recent years we have had 2 Italian festivals throughout the summer. Gates is also the host of Rochester's Catholic Diocese and everybody knows that the majority of the Italian population is Catholic. The Italian American community, as well as the Rochester community as a whole has always looked at Gates as Rochester's very own "Little Italy", but in the summer of 2015, the Italian American Community Center partnered up with a few other organizations and select people and with much thanks to our Town Supervisor, Mark Assini and the President of the Little Italy festival, the man with this great vision, Silvano D. Orsi, Gates is officially Rochester's Little Italy District. A project is well under way to create a Little Italy District similar of what you would see in San Diego or New York City. A place that you can go spend the day with your family, do some shopping, eat some delicious food or get some espresso. A little construction is going to be needed to create this authentic Italian feel, to make you feel like you are actually in Italy. But it is definitely official, The town of Gates, is Rochester New Yorks Little Italy. From Lyell Avenue and Lee Road all the way down to Spencerport Road and Elmgrove Road.
